“Treat every patient as if your own child”- Founder, Kenro Izu
Organization History
Friends Without A Border (Friends) is a not-for-profit organisation based in New York City and Japan. Started in 1996 by world renowned photographer Kenro Izu, Friends is committed to providing high-quality and compassionate healthcare to the children of Southeast Asia.
We believe every child has the right to a healthy and happy life.
Friends built and opened Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Since then, AHC has treated over 1.6 million children and trained thousands of healthcare professionals. In January of 2013, Friends and AHC celebrated a long-held goal as Izu presented the hospital to the AHC staff.
Lao Friends Hospital for Children
Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) opened in 2015 and provides free medical care to over 15,000 children each year. Patients and their families often travel long distances, up to 8 hours, to receive the medical care available at LFHC. Every child is treated with high-quality and compassionate medical care, following the motto of “treat every patient as if your own child.”
LFHC is a comprehensive hospital in northern Laos and currently includes: inpatient & outpatient departments, an emergency department, neonatal unit, an operating theater, laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology department. LFHC is also a teaching hospital and provides continued medical education for its staff and district medical professionals. LFHC sees over 1,800 patients each month with common ailments such as infectious diseases, malnutrition, anemia and renal conditions.
Laos has the highest under-5 mortality rate in all Southeast Asia, with one out of 15 children not reaching their fifth birthday.
We are proud to have brought our model of compassionate care to Laos.
